Composition Professor and Tutor
I taught and tutored at Wilbur Wright College, one of the seven City Colleges of Chicago, for 12 years.
As a teacher, I specialized in First-Year Composition, which beyond lecturing, involves researching and developing syllabi, readings, rubrics, schedules, and assignments. I served as a Cohort Chair, providing faculty with a forum to exchange ideas, identify teaching best practices, and foster a collaborative, caring community. I was also grateful to receive numerous awards for embedding digital literacy into existing courses and developing students into self-directed, critical thinkers.
I always felt compelled to invest in modern teaching methodologies, and this led me to bring my classes “online”—to transform my traditional teaching methods and fully utilize the app Brightspace, which was the learning management system used by Wright College. Without being fully aware at the time, I was delving into the principles of User Experience (UX) and Universal Design (UD) to offer accessibility while engaging, stimulating, and challenging learners. I used my planning, organizing, researching, and writing skills to create a highly-rated student learning experience.
I now understand that every semester in my college career was a big project in itself, a learning experience with multiple assignments (and assessments), with students and my department as stakeholders. I designed each project before the beginning of each semester, and after the project was completed, I submitted my grades.
Using screenshots from Brightspace and other saved materials, I can offer examples of my work on these grand projects. The first sample is a broad overview of a Composition class from Wright College: English 102, Section C2, from the Fall semester of 2023. The second sample is a deep dive into a representative assignment given that semester: the Annotated Bibliography.
